Rogers City, Michigan

Rogers City is a city, the county seat of Presque Isle County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,322. Rogers City is located on Lake Huron and is home to two salmon fishing tournaments. The world?s largest open pit limestone quarry, the Port of Calcite, is located within the city limits and is one of the largest shipping ports on the Great Lakes.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.8 km² (8.4 mi²). 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 45.91% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,322 people, 1,480 households, and 914 families residing in the city. The population density is 280.7/km² (727.2/mi²). There are 1,626 housing units at an average density of 137.4/km² (355.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.43% White, 0.03% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,480 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 25.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,531, and the median income for a family is $36,310. Males have a median income of $31,515 versus $19,107 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,750. 7.6% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.5% are under the age of 18 and 10.3% are 65 or older.
