Roger Newdigate

Sir Roger Newdigate (1719-1806) was an English politician and collector of antiquities.

He was born in Arbury[?], Warwickshire. In 1741 he was elected member of parliament for Middlesex, and later for the University of Oxford. His fortune endowed the Newdigate prize for poetry at the university, which helped make the names of many illustrious writers.
