Rock Island County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 149,374. Its county seat is Rock Island, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,168 km² (451 mi²). 1,105 km² (427 mi²) of it is land and 63 km² (24 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.41% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 149,374 people, 60,712 households, and 39,159 families residing in the county. The population density is 135/km² (350/mi²). There are 64,489 housing units at an average density of 58/km² (151/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.52% White, 7.54% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.76% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 8.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 60,712 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.10% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.50% are non-families. 30.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,608, and the median income for a family is $47,956. Males have a median income of $35,998 versus $24,234 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,164. 10.70% of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.70% are under the age of 18 and 6.80% are 65 or older.
