Roane County, Tennessee

Roane County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 51,910. Its county seat is Kingston6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,023 km² (395 mi²). 935 km² (361 mi²) of it is land and 88 km² (34 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.61% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 51,910 people, 21,200 households, and 15,242 families residing in the county. The population density is 56/km² (144/mi²). There are 23,369 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (65/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.24% White, 2.71% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 21,200 households out of which 28.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 27.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,226, and the median income for a family is $41,399. Males have a median income of $32,204 versus $22,439 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,456. 13.90% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.80% are under the age of 18 and 13.80% are 65 or older.
