Riverside is a town located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,875.

Geography Riverside is located at 40°54'28" North, 72°39'45" West (40.907643, -72.662591)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.5 km² (5.2 mi²). 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.92% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,875 people, 846 households, and 485 families residing in the town. The population density is 217.7/km² (563.4/mi²). There are 926 housing units at an average density of 70.1/km² (181.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 59.10% White, 35.58% African American, 1.08% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.36% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 9.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 846 households out of which 20.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.8% are married couples living together, 16.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.6% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the town the population is spread out with 14.5% under the age of 18, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 36.3% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 144.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 151.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $28,208, and the median income for a family is $35,724. Males have a median income of $27,857 versus $28,103 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,428. 21.0% of the population and 20.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.0% are under the age of 18 and 10.7% are 65 or older.
