Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,128 people, 2,322 households, and 1,569 families residing in the town. The population density is 981.8/km² (2,541.0/mi²). There are 2,466 housing units at an average density of 395.1/km² (1,022.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 79.62% White, 15.19% African American, 0.39% Native American, 1.58% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.99% from two or more races. 3.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,322 households out of which 40.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
