Rio del Mar is a town located in Santa Cruz County, California. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,198.

Geography Rio del Mar is located at 36°57'50" North, 121°53'16" West (36.963764, -121.887690)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 35.14% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,198 people, 4,008 households, and 2,549 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,187.7/km² (3,077.3/mi²). There are 5,022 housing units at an average density of 648.5/km² (1,680.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.74% White, 0.61% African American, 0.53% Native American, 2.58% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 1.87% from other races, and 2.51% from two or more races. 6.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,008 households out of which 25.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.74.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.2% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 31.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $75,282, and the median income for a family is $85,355. Males have a median income of $70,612 versus $41,449 for females. The per capita income for the town is $39,034. 6.3% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.5% are under the age of 18 and 4.6% are 65 or older.
