Rio Grande County, Colorado

Rio Grande County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 12,413. The county seat is Del Norte.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,362 km² (912 mi²). 2,361 km² (912 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,413 people, 4,701 households, and 3,417 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (14/mi²). There are 6,003 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.93% White, 0.35% African American, 1.26% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 21.45% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races. 41.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,701 households out of which 35.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,836, and the median income for a family is $36,809. Males have a median income of $30,432 versus $23,005 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,650. 14.50% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.40% are under the age of 18 and 11.20% are 65 or older.
