Rio Grande City, Texas

Rio Grande City is a city located in Starr County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,923. It is the county seat of Starr County6.

Geography Rio Grande City is located at 26°22'50" North, 98°49'6" West (26.380667, -98.818364)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²). 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,923 people, 3,333 households, and 2,796 families residing in the city. The population density is 606.5/km² (1,571.6/mi²). There are 3,846 housing units at an average density of 195.6/km² (506.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.97% White, 0.30% African American, 0.44% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 12.51% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. 95.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,333 households out of which 47.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% are married couples living together, 19.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.1% are non-families. 14.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.47 and the average family size is 3.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,853, and the median income for a family is $21,363. Males have a median income of $20,245 versus $14,984 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,684. 44.1% of the population and 40.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 57.3% are under the age of 18 and 33.7% are 65 or older.
