Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,396 km² (539 mi²). 1,393 km² (538 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,469 people, 2,245 households, and 1,537 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 2,789 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.07% White, 0.11% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
