Richmond, Indiana

Richmond, Indiana is called the "birthplace of recorded jazz" because some early jazz records originated here. Richmond is the county seat of Wayne County. As of 2000 the city's population was 39,124.

Richmond is the home of Earlham College[?].

Richmond High School may be the home of the only art museum located in a public school in the country.

Geography Richmond is located at 39°49'49" North, 84°53'26" West (39.830189, -84.890668)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 60.3 km² (23.3 mi²). 60.1 km² (23.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 39,124 people, 16,287 households, and 9,918 families residing in the city. The population density is 650.8/km² (1,685.3/mi²). There are 17,647 housing units at an average density of 293.6/km² (760.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.78% White, 8.87% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 2.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,287 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,210, and the median income for a family is $38,346. Males have a median income of $30,849 versus $21,164 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,096. 15.7% of the population and 12.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.8% are under the age of 18 and 10.8% are 65 or older.
