Rhythm guitar refers to a style of
guitar playing that is common in
rock and roll music. A rock and roll song is typically constructed around a small sequence of
chords, sometimes called a "riff", over which the melody is sung; these chords are played by the rhythm guitarist.
In contrast, the lead guitar player plays a melody comprising a series of single notes (a "guitar solo"), which like the sung melody is played over the riff.
