Rhinelander, Wisconsin

Rhinelander is a city located in Oneida County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,735. It is the county seat of Oneida County6.

Geography Rhinelander is located at 45°38'22" North, 89°24'44" West (45.639515, -89.412086)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.4 km² (7.9 mi²). 20.0 km² (7.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.16% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 7,735 people, 3,214 households, and 1,860 families residing in the city. The population density is 386.9/km² (1,002.5/mi²). There are 3,430 housing units at an average density of 171.5/km² (444.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.83% White, 0.39% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,214 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.1% are non-families. 36.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,622, and the median income for a family is $37,629. Males have a median income of $29,750 versus $22,157 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,047. 12.2% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.1% are under the age of 18 and 9.3% are 65 or older.
