Rankin County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 115,327. Its county seat is Brandon6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,088 km² (806 mi²). 2,006 km² (775 mi²) of it is land and 82 km² (32 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.92% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 115,327 people, 42,089 households, and 31,145 families residing in the county. The population density is 57/km² (149/mi²). There are 45,070 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (58/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.03% White, 17.12% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 42,089 households out of which 36.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 32.40% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,946, and the median income for a family is $51,707. Males have a median income of $36,097 versus $26,096 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,412. 9.50% of the population and 7.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.20% are under the age of 18 and 11.70% are 65 or older.
