Randolph County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 28,262. Its county seat is Elkins6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,693 km² (1,040 mi²). 2,693 km² (1,040 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.02% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 28,262 people, 11,072 households, and 7,661 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (27/mi²). There are 13,478 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.69% White, 1.07% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,072 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 101.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,299, and the median income for a family is $32,632. Males have a median income of $24,751 versus $17,819 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,918. 18.00% of the population and 13.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.30% are under the age of 18 and 12.90% are 65 or older.
