Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 1,002.8 km² (387.2 mi²). 906.9 km² (350.2 mi²) of it is land and 95.9 km² (37.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.56% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,469 people, 1,774 households, and 1,332 families residing in the unorganized territory. The population density is 4.9/km² (12.8/mi²). There are 2,248 housing units at an average density of 2.5/km² (6.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the unorganized territory is 97.67% White, 0.16% African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,774 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.8% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% are non-families. 20.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
