Rains County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 9,139. Its county seat is Emory6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 670 km² (259 mi²). 601 km² (232 mi²) of it is land and 69 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.36% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,139 people, 3,617 households, and 2,680 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 4,523 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.91% White, 2.92% African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.55% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 5.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,617 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 22.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,712, and the median income for a family is $40,329. Males have a median income of $31,983 versus $21,594 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,442. 14.90% of the population and 11.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.50% are under the age of 18 and 14.10% are 65 or older.
