Quitman County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 10,117. Its county seat is Marks6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,053 km² (406 mi²). 1,049 km² (405 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 10,117 people, 3,565 households, and 2,506 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 3,923 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 30.47% White, 68.62% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,565 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.60% are married couples living together, 26.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the county the population is spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 86.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $20,636, and the median income for a family is $25,394. Males have a median income of $23,571 versus $16,993 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,817. 33.10% of the population and 28.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 43.10% are under the age of 18 and 30.60% are 65 or older.
