Quill

A quill is a pen made from a flight feather of a large bird such as a goose. Quills were used as instruments for writing with ink before artificial pens came into use.

The hollow shaft of the quill was used to hold the ink whilst writing, and capillary force saw to it that all the ink did not run out of quill at once. -- (Really? I thought they were used just like any other dip pen. Is anybody more familiar with quill pens?)

Common writing equipment in Medieval times were the quill and parchment.
