Putnam County, Illinois

Putnam County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 6,086. The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. Its county seat is Hennepin, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 446 km² (172 mi²). 414 km² (160 mi²) of it is land and 32 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.23% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,086 people, 2,415 households, and 1,748 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 2,888 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.62% White, 0.62% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 2.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,415 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.10% are married couples living together, 7.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,492, and the median income for a family is $50,708. Males have a median income of $40,938 versus $21,706 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,792. 5.50% of the population and 4.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.80% are under the age of 18 and 3.10% are 65 or older.
