Princeton is a city located in Mercer County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,347. It is the county seat of Mercer County6.

Geography Princeton is located at 37°22'5" North, 81°5'45" West (37.368015, -81.095807)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 6,347 people, 2,967 households, and 1,661 families residing in the city. The population density is 816.9/km² (2,116.6/mi²). There are 3,371 housing units at an average density of 433.9/km² (1,124.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.03% White, 6.21% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,967 households out of which 20.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.0% are non-families. 39.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 25.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 81.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $21,736, and the median income for a family is $32,443. Males have a median income of $25,347 versus $19,750 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,931. 24.1% of the population and 16.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 35.9% are under the age of 18 and 15.9% are 65 or older.
