Primate (religion)

A primate is a bishop who has precedence over a large number of bishoprics, such as a nation. Examples of primates are the Bishop of Rome (primate of Italy), the Archbishop of Canterbury (primate of England), the Archbishop of Armagh (primate of Ireland), and the Archbishop of Quebec (primate of Canada).
