Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,104 km² (426 mi²). 1,100 km² (425 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 42,337 people, 16,001 households, and 12,144 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km² (100/mi²). There are 17,186 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.47% White, 0.32% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,001 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.50% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.10% are non-families. 20.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
