Pottsville, Pennsylvania

Pottsville is a city located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,549. It is the county seat of Schuylkill County6.

Geography Pottsville is located at 40°41'6" North, 76°12'10" West (40.685058, -76.202747)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 15,549 people, 6,399 households, and 3,877 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,426.0/km² (3,697.4/mi²). There are 7,343 housing units at an average density of 673.4/km² (1,746.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.73% White, 2.26% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,399 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% are non-families. 34.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,137, and the median income for a family is $41,124. Males have a median income of $31,510 versus $21,433 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,165. 13.9% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.4% are under the age of 18 and 10.1% are 65 or older.
