Portland is a city located in Sumner County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,458.

Geography Portland is located at 36°34'57" North, 86°30'57" West (36.582482, -86.515707)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.7 km² (11.4 mi²). 29.6 km² (11.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.09% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 8,458 people, 3,226 households, and 2,377 families residing in the city. The population density is 285.7/km² (739.7/mi²). There are 3,502 housing units at an average density of 118.3/km² (306.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.53% White, 2.70% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.40% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 2.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,226 households out of which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,644, and the median income for a family is $40,786. Males have a median income of $30,550 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,559. 10.5% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.7% are under the age of 18 and 14.1% are 65 or older.
