Portland is a city located in Ashley County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 552.

Geography Portland is located at 33°14'12" North, 91°30'42" West (33.236791, -91.511539)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 552 people, 213 households, and 152 families residing in the city. The population density is 197.3/km² (511.1/mi²). There are 247 housing units at an average density of 88.3/km² (228.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 55.62% White, 42.93% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 2.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 213 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,036, and the median income for a family is $32,375. Males have a median income of $23,750 versus $20,446 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,094. 15.9% of the population and 14.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.3% are under the age of 18 and 19.3% are 65 or older.
