Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Port Moresby, population 193,242 (1990), is the capital of Papua New Guinea. The city is located on the Gulf of Papua[?]. Rubber, gold, and copra are the main exports.

Port Moresby was founded by Captain John Moresby[?], who arrived in the area in 1873. The British occupied the city in 1883. During World War II an important Allied base was located at Port Moresby.

A new capital is being built in nearby Waigani[?].
