Polk County, Wisconsin

Polk County is a county located in the State of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 41,319. Its county seat is Balsam Lake[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,477 km² (956 mi²). 2,376 km² (917 mi²) of it is land and 101 km² (39 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.08% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 41,319 people, 16,254 households, and 11,329 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (45/mi²). There are 21,129 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.64% White, 0.15% African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,254 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 99.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.50 males.
