Pleasants County, West Virginia

Pleasants County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 7,514. Its county seat is St. Marys6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 349 km² (135 mi²). 339 km² (131 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.87% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 7,514 people, 2,887 households, and 2,136 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (58/mi²). There are 3,214 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.30% White, 0.48% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,887 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.10% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,736, and the median income for a family is $37,795. Males have a median income of $31,068 versus $18,077 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,920. 13.70% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.80% are under the age of 18 and 7.90% are 65 or older.
