Pittsburg County, Oklahoma

Pittsburg County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 43,953. Its county seat is McAlester6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,569 km² (1,378 mi²). 3,382 km² (1,306 mi²) of it is land and 186 km² (72 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.22% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 43,953 people, 17,157 households, and 11,941 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 21,520 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.20% White, 4.02% African American, 12.50% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 5.20% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,157 households out of which 29.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 101.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,679, and the median income for a family is $35,190. Males have a median income of $28,470 versus $19,886 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,494. 17.20% of the population and 13.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.70% are under the age of 18 and 13.30% are 65 or older.
