The pipits are a group of small passerine birds with medium to long tails. They are in the same family as the wagtails and longclaws.

They are slender, often drab, ground feeding insectivores of open country. Pipits are ground nesters, laying up to six speckled eggs.

There are 35 species, all but one in Anthus
