Pipestone Township, Michigan

Pipestone Township is a township located in Berrien County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,474.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 93.0 km² (35.9 mi²). 92.3 km² (35.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.67% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,474 people, 842 households, and 661 families residing in the township. The population density is 26.8/km² (69.4/mi²). There are 899 housing units at an average density of 9.7/km² (25.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 90.22% White, 4.93% African American, 0.85% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.87% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 11.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 842 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.3% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% are non-families. 18.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the township the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $41,440, and the median income for a family is $45,859. Males have a median income of $32,214 versus $24,432 for females. The per capita income for the township is $16,423. 11.6% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.9% are under the age of 18 and 11.9% are 65 or older.
