The racial makeup of the city is 92.74% White, 4.30% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 2.34% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 871 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.6% are married couples living together, 20.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% are non-families. 38.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
