Pickett County, Tennessee

Pickett County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 4,945. Its county seat is Byrdstown6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 452 km² (175 mi²). 422 km² (163 mi²) of it is land and 30 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.68% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,945 people, 2,091 households, and 1,461 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (30/mi²). There are 2,956 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.15% White, 0.10% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,091 households out of which 27.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 27.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,673, and the median income for a family is $31,355. Males have a median income of $22,367 versus $17,173 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,681. 15.60% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.40% are under the age of 18 and 20.00% are 65 or older.
