Pickens, South Carolina

Pickens is a town located in Pickens County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,012. It is the county seat of Pickens County6.

Geography Pickens is located at 34°52'54" North, 82°42'27" West (34.881700, -82.707477)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.3 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.81% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,012 people, 1,281 households, and 794 families residing in the town. The population density is 474.7/km² (1,227.1/mi²). There are 1,438 housing units at an average density of 226.6/km² (585.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 80.54% White, 16.80% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,281 households out of which 27.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% are non-families. 34.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,364, and the median income for a family is $36,316. Males have a median income of $27,316 versus $19,706 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,436. 20.0% of the population and 12.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.5% are under the age of 18 and 22.5% are 65 or older.
