Philomath is a city located in Benton County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,838.

Geography Philomath is located at 44°32'26" North, 123°21'46" West (44.540443, -123.362787)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,838 people, 1,346 households, and 1,017 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,157.7/km² (2,993.0/mi²). There are 1,434 housing units at an average density of 432.6/km² (1,118.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.25% White, 0.16% African American, 1.64% Native American, 1.20% Asian, 0.23% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 2.27% from two or more races. 3.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,346 households out of which 47.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 15.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the city the population is spread out with 34.3% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $41,461, and the median income for a family is $42,578. Males have a median income of $36,104 versus $25,281 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,620. 8.2% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.2% are under the age of 18 and 10.2% are 65 or older.
