Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. It is contiguous with the city of Philadelphia. As of 2000, the population is 1,517,550. Its county seat is Philadelphia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 369 km² (143 mi²). 350 km² (135 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.29% water.

Demographics As of 2000, 1,517,550 people, 590,071 households, and 352,272 families reside in the county. The population density is 4,337/km² (11,234/mi²). There are 661,958 housing units at an average density of 1,892/km² (4,900/mi²). The racial makeup is 45.02% White, 43.22% African American, 0.27% Native American, 4.46% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.77% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 8.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 590,071 households, 27.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.10% are married couples living together, 22.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.30% are non-families. 33.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 11.10% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 20.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 86.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.80 males.
