Perry County, Kentucky

Perry County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 29,390. Its county seat is Hazard6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 887 km² (343 mi²). 886 km² (342 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 29,390 people, 11,460 households, and 8,491 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km² (86/mi²). There are 12,741 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.34% White, 1.64% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,460 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 13.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $22,089, and the median income for a family is $26,718. Males have a median income of $31,702 versus $20,502 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,224. 29.10% of the population and 26.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 36.00% are under the age of 18 and 20.60% are 65 or older.
