Perquimans County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 11,368. Its county seat is Hertford6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 852 km² (329 mi²). 640 km² (247 mi²) of it is land and 212 km² (82 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 24.86% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,368 people, 4,645 households, and 3,376 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (46/mi²). There are 6,043 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.82% White, 27.99% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,645 households out of which 28.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 12.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 26.60% from 45 to 64, and 19.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 91.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,538, and the median income for a family is $35,212. Males have a median income of $27,251 versus $18,728 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,728. 17.90% of the population and 13.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.20% are under the age of 18 and 15.80% are 65 or older.
