Perkins County, South Dakota

Perkins County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 3,363. Its county seat is Bison6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,487 km² (2,891 mi²). 7,437 km² (2,872 mi²) of it is land and 49 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,363 people, 1,429 households, and 937 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 1,854 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.64% White, 0.15% African American, 1.64% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,429 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 5.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.40% are non-families. 32.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 5.60% from 18 to 24, 23.40% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 23.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.30 males.
