Pennington County, South Dakota

Pennington County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 88,565. Its county seat is Rapid City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,211 km² (2,784 mi²). 7,190 km² (2,776 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 88,565 people, 34,641 households, and 23,278 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 37,249 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.70% White, 0.85% African American, 8.09% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 2.74% from two or more races. 2.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 34,641 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.30% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.80% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.70 males.
