Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,160 people, 2,353 households, and 1,614 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,213.5/km² (3,140.8/mi²). There are 2,628 housing units at an average density of 517.7/km² (1,339.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 63.56% White, 31.64% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 2.82% from two or more races. 4.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,353 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.0% are married couples living together, 24.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 26.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.15.
