Patrick Cardinal Hayes

Patrick Joseph Hayes, later Patrick Cardinal Hayes, (November 20, 1867 - September 4, 1938) was the eighth bishop (fifth archbishop) of the Roman Catholic diocese of New York. He was born in New York, ordained priest on September 8, 1892, and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of New York on July 3, 1914. He was ordained a bishop on October 28, 1914 with the titular see[?] of Tagaste. He was appointed Vicar Apostolic of the Military (American) on November 24, 1917, and appointed Archbishop of New York on March 10, 1919. He was elevated to Cardinal on March 24, 1924. He served as archbishop until his death. He is interred in the crypt under the altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral.
