Parma, Michigan

Parma is a village located in Jackson County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 907.

History Parma's original name was Cracker Hill. You can still mail things to the post office with the name Cracker Hill and it will arrive.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 907 people, 310 households, and 233 families residing in the village. The population density is 593.6/km² (1,541.2/mi²). There are 317 housing units at an average density of 207.4/km² (538.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.14% White, 0.55% African American, 0.88% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 310 households out of which 43.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.32.

In the village the population is spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $39,531, and the median income for a family is $46,429. Males have a median income of $31,307 versus $24,432 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,483. 3.3% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.0% are under the age of 18 and 9.1% are 65 or older.

Culture and Community Parma has two churches: The North Parma United Methodist[?] Church and the Parma United Methodist[?] Church. North Parma serves the farming congregation north of town and the "Plain Parma" church serves the village congregation. North Parma is a white clapboard country church and "Plain Parma" is an orange brick church. Both churches are served by the same minister and are sort of considered one big congregation.


South is the town of Spring Arbor. North is the town of Springport. East is the city and county seat of Jackson, Michigan. West is the city of Albion and beyond that the city of Battle Creek, both in Calhoun County.
