Rules of order, also known as parliamentary procedure, are procedural rules adopted by a deliberative body which outline the processes used by the body to make decisions. Typically, legislatures will have their internally written rules of order. Non-legislative bodies and non-governmental organizations often rely on custom, as compiled in published handbooks such as the U.S.Robert's Rules of Order.
