Palo Pinto County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 27,026. Its county seat is Palo Pinto[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,552 km² (986 mi²). 2,468 km² (953 mi²) of it is land and 84 km² (33 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.30% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,026 people, 10,594 households, and 7,447 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (28/mi²). There are 14,102 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.19% White, 2.32% African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.56% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. 13.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,594 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,203, and the median income for a family is $36,977. Males have a median income of $28,526 versus $18,834 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,454. 15.90% of the population and 12.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.50% are under the age of 18 and 11.80% are 65 or older.
