Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 59,248 people, 25,461 households, and 16,906 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,276.6/km² (3,306.8/mi²). There are 28,044 housing units at an average density of 604.2/km² (1,565.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.83% White, 0.97% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 3.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 25,461 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
