Ortonville Township, Minnesota

Ortonville Township is a township located in Big Stone County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,287.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 48.1 km² (18.6 mi²). 45.2 km² (17.5 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.19% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,287 people, 977 households, and 635 families residing in the township. The population density is 50.6/km² (131.1/mi²). There are 1,189 housing units at an average density of 26.3/km² (68.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.77% White, 0.39% African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 977 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 33.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the township the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 20.1% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $30,000, and the median income for a family is $38,486. Males have a median income of $30,250 versus $20,101 for females. The per capita income for the township is $16,873. 9.3% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.2% are under the age of 18 and 9.1% are 65 or older.
