The Order of the Phoenix is a fictional organisation re-established by Albus Dumbledore in the book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, after Lord Voldemort's return to power at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

The original Order of the Phoenix was set up by Dumbledore at the height of Voldemort's powers. Among the original members were Lily[?] and James Potter[?] (Harry's parents), Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Alastor Moody. Most of the members of the Order were killed in the battles against Voldemort. The name is probably related to Fawkes[?], Dumbledore's pet phoenix, whose feathers form the core of both Voldemort and Harry's wands. In the fifth book, Dumbledore sends Fawkes on several missions for the Order.

After Harry witnessed Voldemort's return to power at the end of the fourth book, Dumbledore sent Sirius to inform the other members of the Order. The headquarters of the Order were set up in Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, London - Sirius' family home. Dumbledore is the Secret Keeper for this house; and so it cannot be found by anyone who Dumbledore has not personally told the location to.

Part of the motivation for restarting the Order was because Cornelius Fudge, Minister for Magic, absolutely refused to believe that Lord Voldemort had risen again, and insisted suspected Dumbledore of spreading rumours to try to take down Fudge.

It is thought that the members of the Order will remain the central characters in the fight against Voldemort, acting as "good" counterparts to Voldemort's Death Eaters.
