Orange County is a county located in the State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 25,881. Its county seat is Orange6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 889 km² (343 mi²). 885 km² (342 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,881 people, 10,150 households, and 7,470 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (76/mi²). There are 11,354 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.36% White, 13.78% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,150 households out of which 29.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.70% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,889, and the median income for a family is $48,197. Males have a median income of $31,982 versus $24,209 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,107. 9.20% of the population and 7.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.60% are under the age of 18 and 10.80% are 65 or older.
